Garridos confess to police in Jaycee Dugard kidnapping and rape case


The couple charged with kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 and holding her captive for 18 years have confessed to police about the crime, an attorney for one of the defendants said Monday.


Phillip and Nancy Garrido are charged with kidnapping Dugard in the case that captured international attention when Dugard and her daughters were discovered in 2009 living in a ramshackle compound in the Garridos' Antioch, Calif. backyard. Phillip Garrido, who is also charged with rape, is the father of Dugard's children.

Actress Jane Russell, who became a star with the 1943 release of "The Outlaw," Howard Hughes' challenge to the Hollywood production code, has died. She was 89.


Russell went on to play Calamity Jane opposite Bob Hope in "The Paleface" (1948), and she starred with Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 musical "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes."

Sunday's 83rd Academy Awards telecast, with a hosting duo of James Franco and Anne Hathaway that was drubbed by many critics, scored a 24.6 household rating in the top 56 TV markets, according to early figures from the Nielsen Co. The ceremony, which awarded the best picture prize to "The King's Speech," was off 7% compared with last year but slipped just 2% among viewers age 18 to 49.

Tom Hooper wins director Oscar


Tom Hooper won the Oscar for directing "The King's Speech" at the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday night. It is the first Oscar win for the 38-year-old filmmaker, who was considered to be in a tight race with "The Social Network's" David Fincher for the prize. Hooper, whose film chronicles England's King George VI trying to overcome his stutter, also won the Directors Guild of America Award.


In addition to Fincher, Hooper was competing against Darren Aronofsky for "Black Swan," Joel and Ethan Coen for "True Grit" and David O. Russell for "The Fighter." The Oscars are taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

'The King's Speech' wins original screenplay Oscar

David Seidler won the Oscar for original screenplay for "The King's Speech" at the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday night. It was the first Oscar win for Seidler, who was considered the favorite in this category. Though ineligible for a Writers Guild of America nomination, Seidler won the British Independent Film Award and the BAFTA, the British equivalent of the Academy Award, and was nominated for a Golden Globe.

"The King's Speech" was competing against "Another Year," "The Fighter," "Inception" and "The Kids Are All Right." The Oscars are taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Christian Bale wins supporting actor Oscar

Christian Bale won the Oscar for supporting actor for his performance in "The Fighter" at the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday night. It's the first Oscar win for the 37-year-old British actor, who plays a former pro boxer fighting drug addiction. Bale was considered to be in a heated race with "The King's Speech's" Geoffrey Rush as the favorite in this category. Bale previously received honors from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, Critics' Choice, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild.

In addition to Rush, Bale was competing against John Hawkes for "Winter's Bone," Jeremy Renner for "The Town" and Mark Ruffalo for "The Kids Are All Right." The Oscars are taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
